What is Recycle for a Reason or “R4R”?

Our History

Recycle for a Reason began in January 2013 with a vision to keep household goods, clothing, sporting goods, and furniture from going to "the dump" and reallocating resources to people in need. Our thought was that it would help save the earth's resources, provide affordable goods to our community, and we could use the funds to support other causes.

In short, we wanted to bless the earth, bless those who are financially challenged, bless those who have good, usable items they'd love to donate, and bless our community and world.

We've held more than 110 collections and sales, excluding time lost for Covid and now taking January's off.

Every month we have our "pay what you want" sale on the 2nd Saturday and preceding Friday from 10am - 3 pm. And we have collection days on the two Saturdays before.

Our Board

  • Jackie Holmquist UMCC
  • Kay Abrams UMCC
  • Dee Davis The Crossing
  • Lynn Elliot Latter Day St. of Jesus Christ, Wasilla
  • Andrea Hofeling Latter Day St. of Jesus Christ, Eagle River
  • Nancy Bernard St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Eagle River

Our Goals

  1. Create a place to recycle used items. Help save the earth’s resources, the local land-fill and tax dollars.
  2. Reallocate community resources to those in need.
  3. Help the financially challenged stretch their incomes.
  4. Create a portal through which new people can be
introduced to a community of Christians.
  5. Provide an opportunity for volunteer service to high school students and those needing interaction with others.
  6. Raise funds for community and world-wide missions.
  7. Foster personal relationships in the area.
  8. Bring God’s Kingdom to our corner of Alaska.

Who have we helped?

We don't always know who needs help.  So, we trust many knowledgeable people and organizations to help us share the goods we receive. These organizations are part of an ever-growing list of partners.
